Workshop Overview

Rethinking risk, safety, and children’s need for challenge

Playing with Risk is an introductory online course that invites educators to rethink how risk shows up in children’s play and in adult decision-making.

Rather than framing risk as something to eliminate, this course explores why children are drawn to challenge, uncertainty, and testing their limits, and what this means for wellbeing, learning, and development. Educators are supported to consider the difference between risk and hazard, and to reflect on how adult beliefs, fears, and systems shape children’s opportunities for adventurous play.

This course offers shared language and foundational thinking around risky play. It is designed as a starting point that stands alone, while also preparing educators for deeper exploration through a face-to-face 2–3 hour workshop, where practice is unpacked in greater depth.

This learning is reflective, not prescriptive. It supports educators to build confidence, clarity, and readiness to engage in more nuanced conversations about risk in play.
